HOW TO WRITE A GOOD BIOGRPAHY TO MUSIC INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

Before you start to write your 'actual' biog, be sure to make some notes as a guide.

For example note down things like: Your background, your accomplishments and achievements, goals in life, and objectives and aims as a Musician and/or Artist.

Its important to remember who your target market is.. Who are you writing this Biography for?

To find a Manager?, A Booking agent? A Record Label?, Media Contacts@ TV, Radio?

All of these people /companies are very busy, who may well deal with many dozens even hundreds of "wanna-be's" every week or month, so you need to do something that will make you stand out from the crowd yet at the same time include all the necessary info they require without being too long winded. Being busy and bombarded with wanna be mail on a regular basis can make a lot of these professionals numb to most things they read and hear so reading a long winded, never ending biog is the last thing they want to read. So..make your bio compact- to the point-but interesting and lively. You should include reviews, quotes or comments that may spark the imagination or curiosity to see or hear more.

Most important thing is to be organized and focused and not just write blind..thats when it starts to get longwinded, so remember : a little bit of focus goes along way.

Introduce Yourself and your music:

Kick off by introducing yourself and/or your band- Sounds obvious but you would be surprised how many acts actually forget to label thier biog and leave the AnR wondering what the actual professional name of band/artist is. Be sure to be clear about your specific genre/style of music, how long you have been playing/writing etc and maybe where you got started and where you are from. If at that point you can add a one liner review from a press person or music contact all the better. If the first few lines are then all they read, at least they will know who you are, where you're from, how long you are together, what music you play and what others think of you! Good start! and Far better than 'I'm John from London -Heres my music.'That won't go down too well at all.

What are you up to?

Got a new song/cd release coming out ? Mention it directly. Got a tour arranged? or upcoming solo shows? Heres the place to write it down. If you have sponsors or anyone supporting your songs like radio or tv, tell them. They are always interested in whats new and what kind if support there is around something, so the more interesting this section is the better.

Background

Here you can let them know about your background, let them know why or how you formed and let them know what you have been doing since formation.Past experience/shows and accomplishments. Anything that shows you have profile is good. Played for a high profile act as support? Or sold x amount of units on your own? Got an enormous fanbase on Facebook/myspace etc? Had a successful tour/album/single? Got great reviews? Won awards or competitions? If you have additional plans and ideas that they can build on its great to mention that too.Basically show them all that you have already done, success is very appealing but then ignite their interest in all that you can do, have planned etc.

Finally

Make sure you label it well! Dont forget NAMES, ADDRESS, EMAIL, TELEPHONE NUMBER ETC. Attach a good clear photograph, not a photocopy. Make sure you leave clear and correctly spelt links, where they can go to listen to your music and visit your online pages etc. If you are sending in a cd with your Biog, make sure that it is also clearly and correctly labelled, with Name and Contact details, in case it gets separated from the biog itself. Dont overwrite. With Biogs you need to deliver facts in an interesting manner but as briefly as possible.

Soo.. not too short, definitely not too long, Interesting, lively, facts! who you are, what you are currently doing, what you have donein the past, and what you have upcoming in the future, and dont forget to label everything well.

So good luck with it all:)
